youarethecity is an urban research, design and planning practice led by Kaja Kühl.

Research

Integrating contextual and historical research, mapping, data visualization and stakeholder interviews youarethecity delivers multi-scalar research in collaboration with public, non-profit and academic partners with a focus on ecosystems, climate action, regenerative materials, and environmental justice. As a design consultant Kaja Kühl offers expertise in climate adaptation, passive house design, life cycle assessments (LCA) and bio-based material value chains for architecture and urban design projects. Planning

Stakeholder Engagement and Urban Prototyping – “youarethecity stands for the idea that everybody has agency in the shaping of their own environment.” We support planning and urban design projects with innovative engagement strategies. We prototype urban interventions and programs as a way to inform future transformations and public policy.

Kaja Kühl (Dipl.Ing, AICP) is an urban designer with a Diploma in Architecture from the University in Karlsruhe, Germany and a Master of Science in Urban Planning from Columbia University in New York. 

Her design work and writing have appeared in Landscape Architect Magazine, Volume, AD, the Guradian, the Venice Architecture Biennale, Center for Architecture and Urban Omnibus

Kaja is a passionate educator and teaches seminars and design studios at Columbia University and the City College of New York in addition to frequent workshops in non-institutional settings.

youarethecity is a WBE certified business in New York City and New York State and is located in Brooklyn on the Lenapehoking, the unceded homeland of the Lenape people.
