Hemp Homes, 2022
Located at Wally Farms in the Hudson Valley, this pair of guest homes are experiments in radically low embodied carbon architecture. Built almost entirely with bio-based materials they combine passive house strategies and carbon-storing materials with a small footprint employing multiple strategies to address the climate crisis.
Walls were made from two different techniques of building with hemp lime, combining prefabricated hemp blocks with spray-applied hemp lime (often also called hempcrete). While not structural, hemp lime has fantastic thermal properties, regulates humidity and is pest- and fire-resistant. Read more about hemp lime construction and other research addressing climate action in buildings in the Project Diary.
