Newark Masterplan
Masterplan & Urban Design 2012
Having lost jobs, industry and residents over the past few decades, Newark faces many challenges of the typical post-industrial American City. It also has the history, culture and infrastructure of a city with potential for growth. Working for Urban Design+, we developed the urban design element for the Newark’s comprehensive revision of its Master Plan. The goal of this Urban Design Element is to outline a framework for the growth of the city and articulate the design standards and guidelines that will regulate future development – in order to ensure that Newark’s essential qualities are preserved and enhanced. Formally adopted by Newark’s Planning Board in September 2012, the Master Plan serves as a regulatory document that will guide the city’s land use, development, preservation, sustainability, and neighborhood revitalization activities through the year 2025. The project was lead by Jonathan Rose Company and the entire document can be downloaded here.
