Urban Sawmill – Designing a Biobased Circular Economy, 2025
Urban Sawmill: Designing A Biobased Circular Economy summarizes the work of a graduate architecture studio and research workshop at the Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York taught by Kaja Kühl and Anoushae Eirabie in the Fall of 2025.
The pedagogy of combining a six credit studio with an additional three credit seminar allowed students and faculty to unpack the multi-scalar and systemic challenges of salvaging and utilizing wood from the urban forest from mapping a city-wide infrastructure necessary to transport wood waste and logs, to designing the location and program of a sawmill embedded in an industrial neighborhood to understanding the challenges of transforming salvaged wood into value through hands-on experimentation.
